A 20-point gap in IIHS driver death rates is worth about $1,420 over five years of ownership. A 1-point gap is worth $14.20 per year. Here is how that math works β and where it stops.
A micromort puts a price on a one-in-a-million chance of death
Vehicle fatality rates are hard to reason about because they are small. A rate of 6 deaths per million registered vehicle-years means 6 chances in a million β or 6 micromorts. A rate of 26 is 20 micromorts higher.
U.S. federal agencies put a dollar value on small reductions in fatality risk using a value of statistical life, or VSL. The current Department of Transportation guidance is $14.2 million (base year 2025). Divide by one million and each micromort is worth $14.20.
Multiply the death-rate gap between two vehicles by $14.20, then by the years you plan to own the car. That is the illustrative break-even premium β the most you would pay for the safer option if safety were the only factor.

In this sample, paying more did not buy a lower death rate
Only 30 of the 181 vehicles in the used-car dataset currently have curated price ranges. We use each range's midpoint as a rough price proxy.
The nearly flat relationship is descriptive of this selected sample. It is not evidence that price never buys safety across the entire used market.
The numbers look precise. The evidence is not.

- Compare like with like.Model years, body style, drivetrain, condition, mileage, tires, and repair history can all dominate a small statistical difference.
- Prefer stronger evidence over a prettier number.A low rate with a wide confidence interval is less decision-useful than it looks. A reported zero does not mean zero risk.

The last column compares each point estimate with IIHS's overall rate of 38 for 2020 and equivalent models during 2018β2021. It is not a guaranteed savings or a forecast for an individual driver.
What this analysis does not do
Association, not causation. IIHS adjusts for driver age and gender, but differences in mileage, roads, geography, income, and behavior remain.
Driver deaths only. The rate does not include passengers, people in other vehicles, pedestrians, or cyclists.
Wide intervals. Many low point estimates have broad 95% confidence intervals. Small gaps are commonly statistical noise.
Group history. The data describes specific model-year spans during 2018β2021. It is not a lifetime forecast for one vehicle.
Price proxy. The prices are curated ranges for 30 vehicles; their midpoints are not sales-weighted market averages.
Policy value, not personal value. VSL is designed for evaluating many small risk reductions. A household may rationally value risk differently.
